On May 22, 2022 I attended an event in San Francisco, CA celebrating Bitcoin Pizza day.
For those who don’t already know, May 22 marked the 12 year anniversary of the first retail transaction involving Bitcoin. 2 pizzas for the low low price of 10,000 BTC, (an estimated $296,000,000 pizza at present) purchased by Laszio Hanyecz.
a
San Francisco pizzeria, Sunset Squares Pizza hosted a global event in collaboration with PizzaDAO at Temple nightclub in San Francisco. This event happened globally, (Vancouver, Chicago, Buenos Aires, LA, Seoul, London, SF, and more.)
The event was branded to have free pizza, an NFT exhibit, and DJs.
I was thrilled to experience an IRL event celebrating crypto and NFTs, and to support other local NFT projects.
As I approached my parking spot, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and anticipation for what I was about to experience.
As I approached the club I noticed several people out in front enjoying the beautiful San Francisco weather, and music coming from inside the venue. With the understanding that there would be free pizza at this event, I forewent eating lunch, and was consequently famished.
Sadly, and to my surprise, there was not even one slice of pizza, which I found odd considering the title of the event was Bitcoin Pizza Day, hosted by an NFT Pizza joint, and they presented free pizza as one of the perks of attendance.
Although disappointed, I continued my journey into the club in hopes to meet other NFT creators and learn about amazing projects. Again, I was extremely surprised to realize there was only one NFT project on display and ZERO actual NFTs.
As I approached the gentleman who was manning the booth for the Bay Apes Club, he shouted to me, “HEY! DO YOU WANT TO INVEST?” to which I replied, ” INVEST IN WHAT? TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PROJECT.”
The experience got really interesting from there. It turned out that the gentleman who attempted to offer me an investment opportunity hadn’t the foggiest idea what the project was even about. Upon this realization, I asked him to direct me to someone who could effectively articulate the scope of the project. He pointed me to a dude in a Bay Apes Shirt (the name of the project).
I approached the next gentleman and introduced myself, and asked for the details on their NFT project. While he was able to more effectively articulate the project roadmap and model, It became very clear that the deliverables of this project to the investors are nothing short of theoretical. Apparently, the $1400 dollar NFTs are VIP passes that offer varying perks specific to each respective NFT. This service includes everything from free entry, to an open bar, to bottle service.
Unfortunately the Bay Apes do not have a physical club to offer their holders, and rather are declaring “club takeovers”. Which apparently includes offering these theoretical perks at various clubs throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Although I have yet to see any promotion to that end.
To summarize, the event fell very short of my expectations. The Bay apes have a cool concept and have already sold $170,000 worth of their NFTs, but will they be able to deliver the exclusive VIP club experience they’re promising their holders, Only time will tell.
