Grisedale Valley (December)

One thing I’ve learnt over the last year of editing images in Photoshop and Lightroom is that nearly every photograph has hidden depths and colours that you can drag back into the image.

This is illustrated perfectly by the following example, a photo that I took as a quick snap during one of our many walks when staying at Patterdale Hall Estate in Cumbria.

The photo below was taken at 1/100th sec at f4.0, (all auto landscape setting by the way as this was before I learned the magic of going manual and using a tripod!)

As you can see it is dull lacks colour and any wow factor, which is why it sat on my hard drive for so many years, in fact right up until today.  BUT, now I know that the camera actually captures at lot of information and if you use the right tools you can drag those yummy greens, yellows and browns back into the world and your lacklustre photo becomes a living breathing work of art.

So for this rescue mission I did some minor adjustments to the contrast, colour saturation followed by adding a number of filters to enhance the yummy colours of the bracken and the grass in the grazing fields.  These were all applied as a series of layers with areas masked out off to ensure that they were burnt out with   a final addition of a dodge then a burn layer…..and hey presto:
