Sarracenia - Leucophylla – Watercolour @mycreativeimages.com

Well here I am again rambling away about another of my passions, Carnivorous plants.  Specifically Sarracenia, what on earth have plants got to do with photography or digital art I hear you say?  Well everything!  If you enjoy looking at something and it has character, texture and colour, its perfect to photograph and ideal to convert into digital art.   Lets just dive in and take a look at the first image I have posted as a print in my shop, click here to view a Sarracenia Leucophylla print.

Sarracenia are native to the USA and not something that you will see here in the UK, unless its the Sarracenia Purpurea, which can be found in some areas but is treated as an invasive no native plant and destroyed.  The Sarracenias are just stunning plants and grows in bogs and march areas where is constantly wet and there are plenty of yummy insects and flies for it to feast on.  Why do I collect, propagate and grow Sarracenia, why do I take photos of them, well that’s simple, the colours, the patterns the shape, the flowers……they are just amazing, I dare you to disagree!  Yes I know there are a lot of plain green Sarracenia and perhaps you have seen them sat in glass containers in the garden centre, but just like cars or shirts they come in many shapes and colours.

My preference is for plants with lots of veins and contrasting colours on the pitcher tube and lid, or deep dark purple to black.  With this in mind here is a before and after  showing a snap shot of one of my plants (hand held with no tripod) which I have masked out and converted to a digital watercolour:

As you can see the before photo is far from perfect, well other than the fact its a stunning plant, the depth of field is out, the composition is wrong and it just doesn’t cut it as a image that can be used as a stand alone print. BUT! I spent some time masking out the background, enhancing the colours and then ran it through a photoshop Action to apply a pen outline and a watercolour texture and hey presto you have a yummy piece of wall art, either A4 framed or A3 framed…..I bet you can visualise this image on your wall right now……close your eyes and picture it, then click here to visit my shop and fill your basket with my yummy wall art!

Grins, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read my poor excuse for a blog!
