Sunset near Crook Barn

Sunset Behind Trees at Crook Barn

16th October 2017

Well the first day of our October visit to Ullswater saw thick fog and chilly temperature on the way across country on the A66.  But this was soon to change as we arrived in Patterdale and put our boots on to go for a wander, mother nature waved her hands and brushed away the fog and let the sun shine down on us for a short walk to watch the sunset.

We headed out of Patterdale Hall Estate turning left and heading towards the church, then crossed over the A592 near the school and headed up the farm track to Side Farm and looking up at the imposing Place Fell.  Through the farm yard and turning right for a gentle stroll up to Crook Barn.

We were heading to a little spot amongst the moss and trees to watch the sun go down over Bridgend and Hartsop. The weather was very kind to us with blue skys and big fluffy white clouds with the warmth of the sun making it a pleasant stroll.

Needless to say the sun was dropping fast and as it fell behind a copse of trees I had time to grab a few shots using the trees to hide the glare of the sun.  The shadows thrown across the grass, trimmed to perfection by the Angora sheep, were deep and dark making such a simple scene a feast for the eyes.

Dropping the camera onto the tripod and using my 10-18mm set to F10 and ISO 100 I snap off a few bracketed shots, shifting position a bit to mask the sun.  A few mins on Lightroom CC and a minor lens correction and some darkening of the lens flare and we are set.

Then we wandered a little further passed a stone barn and through a five bar gate (see below) to a nice sheltered area where we can sit and watch the sun go down over the peaks and enjoy a piping hot cup of coffee before strolling back the Patterdale Hall Estate to unpack the car.
